Leaders for Life

Fairmont creates many diverse opportunities for students to serve one another and the community, building leadership skills that last far beyond the high school years. When a junior at Fairmont died following a suicide attempt, students came together to create The Hope Squad. The organization pledges support to fellow students who are struggling with life. The Hope Squad is a connection point between troubled students and mental health providers.

Motivated to Help Others

When Fairmont says “We Are Firebirds” it extends beyond the walls of the school. Fairmont Firebird leaders create opportunities to serve the Kettering community.

“Spirit Chain” is an annual fundraising competition between Fairmont and Centerville High Schools. The activity was started in 1985 by Roger Bauser, a former Spanish teacher and Fairmont Activities Coordinator. The objective is to bring friendly, non-athletic competition to the Fairmont-Centerville rivalry to raise money for charities.

The non-profit charities that receive financial support from the “Spirit Chain” are selected by student leaders within each school. The total amount of money raised is announced at the Fairmont-Centerville football game each year. In the end, everyone’s a winner with thousands of dollars going to local charities. As of 2021, the two schools have raised a combined $2.8 million dollars.
